NAREB® Mission Statement

The purpose of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers® is to enhance the professional and business conditions of NAREB® Realtist® members by strengthening the consumer capacity of Black, minority, and emerging target market segments that Realtists® serve. Utilizing economic, political, legal, and social leverage, we are working to remediate disparate and discriminatory housing and property ownership policies and practices prevailing in the United States.

NAREB® Vision Statement

The enduring commitment of the National Association of Real Estate Brokers® will foster the expansion of inter-generational wealth creation of Black households through the promotion and retention of increased levels of real property ownership and investments, to preserve and fulfill the Realtist® credo, "Democracy in Housing."

NAREB® History Brief

After World War II, the nation remained confronted with vestiges of deep-seated racial segregation that were increasingly difficult impasses for African-Americans to endure. During the postwar years, Black Americans’ aspirations for a better life in America were emerging. Black people were attaining gainful employment, and the Supreme Court had finally passed a ruling that restrictive covenants and private agreements to exclude specified races from the ownership and occupancy of real property in exclusively white neighborhoods were not enforceable under the law.

Under the fallaciously justified “separate but equal” notion in the school system, and despite favorable court rulings, discriminatory housing practices still prevailed, and equal housing had not yet become reality. It was in this environment of abject racial discrimination that the first, soon-to-become “Realtist” met in Tampa, Florida. On July 29, 1947, the National Association of Real Estate Brokers® (NAREB®) was founded, and on that sweltering night, they committed to the fulfillment of the principle, “Equal Housing Opportunity for All."

Since inception, NAREB remains an association proud of its past accomplishments and continuously dedicated to its unrelenting pursuit of the REALTIST® vision and mission - “Democracy in Housing”.
